PathWays to Reading
In today’s fast-paced world, I welcome the quiet moment when a child discovers that she is a reader. Believing that a child’s reading life is her life, my passion is helping educators build a firm foundation of reading skills that empowers all children to become forever learners. My gift of inspiring teachers to know and understand how the brain learns to read is foundational in my learning opportunities.
Jane’s dedication to the teaching profession finds her serving as a literacy consultant at ESSDACK. She facilitates learning in Pathways to Reading, a powerful model whose primary focus is to guide teachers in their understanding and application of the five scientifically validated components of the reading process. She’s at her best when collaborating with educators and assisting districts with reading coaching, differentiated instruction, and data analysis. Jane developed a line of products aligned to the Reading Foundational and Language Skills.
Her presentation style is informal, interactive, and enthusiastic. Classroom examples, lively discussion, and questioning strategies keep learners engaged and in the moment.
Jane is foremost a classroom teacher who developed a deep interest in the reading process. Early in her teaching career, her quest for knowledge and best practices in literacy developed into a passion that inspires educators today.
Jane’s belief that the ever-growing challenge to teach all students to read proficiently stems not from a lack of desire or talent, but from insufficient knowledge. She dedicates much of her personal/professional learning to the science of reading.
Classroom experience became a reality with an Elementary Education degree and 22 third grade students. Desiring to use her skills to teach reading at the foundational level, she transitioned to first grade where she found herself on an amazing journey with a team of educators that implemented a successful K-1 multiage model of instruction to meet the needs of all children.
Formerly the Reading Coordinator at South Central Kansas Special Education Cooperative (SCKSEC), Jane now teaches all students, having created learning and coaching opportunities for not only general education teachers, but also special educators and paraprofessionals. These valuable coaching opportunities afforded her the classroom experiences to team with teachers working with a broad range of students.
Jane’s dedication to professional growth led to a Master of Education degree from Wichita State University. Arriving at ESSDACK in 2007, she brought her belief that "teaching reading is rocket science†and finds knowledge and motivation in the work of Dr. Louisa Moats. Jane’s passion for literacy is shared with teachers as she sees them empowered in their ability to teach a broader range of students to read at grade level. She’s at her best working alongside
educators as they strive to meet the literacy needs of all students.
